A combo caller says the combination out loud while you throw it. In a gym that's the coach holding the pads. Training alone, it's a recording or an app, and FightNome is our app for that job on iPhone and Android.
The reason to want one is simple: reading a combo and throwing it are two different tasks. Every glance at a screen costs you your guard and your rhythm. A voice on the beat leaves your eyes where they belong.
How FightNome calls a combo
- A real voice. Every callout is a recorded human voice, not text to speech, timed so the word lands on the beat. Tempo runs from 74 to 128 BPM.
- Your combo, strike by strike. In combo mode you build any sequence in the editor and the coach repeats it. In reaction mode the coach throws random calls at you, from 6 to 45 a minute.
- Names or pad numbers. Punches can be called as pad numbers 1 to 6 (1 jab, 2 cross, 3 lead hook, 4 rear hook, 5 lead uppercut, 6 rear uppercut). Kicks, knees and elbows are called by name, with lead or rear.
- Phone in your pocket. Play and pause from the headphone remote, with a card on the lock screen.
Hear it called
A 30-second sample round recorded from the FightNome app: the coach calls jab, hook, body on the beat of the music.
What it doesn't do
There's no video and no trainer on screen, so nobody checks your form. It needs no bag, pads or sensors, and it doesn't sell any. The calls are in English. And it's a paid app with no free tier, so if you only want a bell every three minutes, a plain interval timer is simpler.
Questions
What is a boxing combo caller?
An app or a person that calls out the next punches in a combination while you throw them. FightNome does it with a recorded human voice, on the beat of the music.
Can I choose my own combos?
Yes. In combo mode you build any combination strike by strike and the coach calls it, repeated. In reaction mode the coach calls random strikes instead, from 6 to 45 calls a minute.
Does it call pad numbers like 1-2-3?
It can. Punches can be called as pad numbers 1 to 6: 1 jab, 2 cross, 3 lead hook, 4 rear hook, 5 lead uppercut, 6 rear uppercut.
Do I have to watch the screen?
No. The session runs from your headphones, and the phone can stay in your pocket. A live round screen exists, but the app is built to work with your eyes up.
