Kids' boxing gloves: what size to buy

4oz, 6oz, 8oz or 10oz? Here is the size by age and weight, what changes for sparring, how to check the fit, what England Boxing requires, and UK picks.

By the GloveWatch team. Based on the makers' product pages and size charts, England Boxing's 2026 rules and the retailer pages linked under Sources. We have not lab-tested these gloves, and no brand paid to be listed.

Short answer. Young children start in 4oz or 6oz gloves: Blitz lists 4oz for ages 4–5 and 6oz for ages 5–7. Older children move to 8oz or 10oz by bodyweight; on Blitz's chart 8oz fits 38–44 kg and 10oz fits 45–51 kg, recommended up to age 14. Sparring charts run heavier (Everlast: 12–14oz under 45 kg), so follow the club's rule. In England Boxing bouts, approved 10oz or 12oz gloves are kept at ringside.

Kids' glove size by age and weight

Gloves are sold by weight in ounces, and more ounces means more padding. For young children the makers size by age; once a child is heavier, they size by bodyweight. These are the bands Blitz, a UK fight-gear maker, gives for its own gloves:

52–64 kg (114–140 lb)12ozTraining Boxing Gloves chart

Blitz recommends 8oz and 10oz gloves for children up to 14. Its charts leave a gap between a 7-year-old and 38 kg, so for a child in between, use the glove's own chart and the fit check below, and ask the coach.

Bag and pads, or sparring?

The bands above are for training gloves. For sparring, charts go heavier, because extra padding protects the partner too. Everlast's chart puts anyone under 45 kg (100 lb) in 6–10oz for bag and mitt work and 12–14oz for sparring. Brands do not agree, so if your child's club has a sparring rule, that rule wins. For bodyweights above these bands, see the adult boxing glove size guide.

Check the fit

Try gloves on over hand wraps: Everlast says wraps add about an inch around the hand. The fingers should reach the top of the glove without being squashed, and the wrist strap should be snug without pinching. All four Blitz picks below close with a velcro strap. For wraps, 120-inch (3 m) wraps suit kids and small hands; see the hand wraps guide.

UK picks: Blitz kids' gloves

Blitz is a UK store and one of our partner stores. It makes its own kids' gloves and its adult training glove starts at 8oz. The order below follows the child's age, youngest first. It is not a score.

With the gloves

Blitz's single-layer mouth guard comes in a Junior size, moulds in boiling water and comes with a case. Its hand wraps come in 120 inches, and its round focus pads (26 × 26 × 6.5 cm) are the ones Blitz describes as ideal for kids, for a parent holding pads at home.

US picks: Revgear kids' gear

Revgear, a US store and one of our partner stores, sells youth boxing gloves, a kids' kickboxing kit, a junior mouth guard and youth headgear. Check the weights and sizes on each product page.

If your child wants to compete

England Boxing's 2026 rules let children box from age 10, in the Minors category. Young boxers wear the same competition gloves as adults, 10oz or 12oz depending on bodyweight, from the sanctioned brands, and the organiser has approved gloves ready at ringside, so you don't buy competition gloves. Minors, schools, junior and youth boxers must also wear a head guard, and a gum shield is mandatory for every boxer.

So the gloves you buy are for training: kids' 4–6oz gloves for the youngest, then 8oz and up as the child grows, as the club advises.

The rest of a child's kit

Add a mouthguard before any sparring, and a head guard if the club asks for one. Measure around the head just above the ears and check the guard's chart; see the sparring headgear guide. Kids who kick add shin guards. The starter kit lists everything in buying order.

FAQ

What size boxing gloves for a 5-year-old?

Blitz sizes its kids' training gloves by age: 4oz for ages 4–5 and 6oz for ages 5–7. A 5-year-old sits on the border, so try the fit with wraps on.

What size boxing gloves for a 10-year-old?

It depends on weight more than age. On Blitz's chart, 8oz fits 38–44 kg and 10oz fits 45–51 kg, and Blitz recommends 8oz and 10oz for children up to 14. For a lighter child, use the chart of the glove you buy and ask the coach.

Do kids need heavier gloves for sparring?

On Everlast's chart, yes. It gives 12–14oz for sparring under 45 kg, against 6–10oz for bag and mitt work. Follow the club's sparring rule if it has one.

Can my child wear their own gloves in an England Boxing bout?

Competition gloves are 10oz or 12oz from sanctioned brands, set by bodyweight, and approved gloves are kept at ringside. Blitz's own gloves are made for club training, not competition.

Does my child need a mouthguard for boxing?

For sparring, yes, and in England Boxing competition a gum shield is mandatory for every boxer. Blitz's single-layer guard comes in a Junior size, and Revgear sells a junior mouth guard.
