Round timers for boxing & Muay Thai

Three minutes on, one minute off. A wall timer keeps the whole gym on the same clock; an app goes anywhere. Here is what each does well and what to look for.

Short answer. A boxing or Muay Thai round is normally three minutes with one minute of rest. For a club, a programmable wall timer such as the TITLE Platinum keeps everyone on one clock. At home, a compact interval timer or a round-timer app played through a speaker does the same job.

Standard round lengths

Under IFMA amateur Muay Thai rules, senior bouts are three rounds of three minutes with one minute of rest. Three minutes on and one off is also the standard pattern in boxing, which is why it is the default on most gym timers. Many gyms also use shorter rounds, such as 2 minutes, for drills and conditioning.

Wall timer or app?

A wall timer is a dedicated display with a buzzer, mounted where the whole room can see and hear it. It runs all day without a phone, and everyone trains to the same clock. An app costs less or nothing and goes everywhere, but the sound is only as loud as the phone or the speaker it is connected to. Pair it with a gym speaker for a room.

On your body

3. Clip-on interval timer

For running intervals or training outdoors: a small timer that clips to your waistband and vibrates or beeps.

  • Vibration alert is useful where a beep gets lost

If you use an app

Free round-timer apps cover the basics. FightNome goes a step further: a recorded coach's voice calls the rounds, the rest and the strikes on the beat, so you can keep your phone in your pocket.

FAQ

How long is a Muay Thai round?

Under IFMA amateur rules, senior bouts are three rounds of three minutes with a one-minute break.

Do I need a wall timer at home?

No. An app connected to a speaker does the same job for one or two people. A wall timer is worth it when a whole class trains to one clock.

Is there a round timer app that also calls combos?

Yes. FightNome (iPhone and Android) runs the rounds and rest and calls each strike out loud with a recorded human voice, on the beat of the music, so the phone can stay in your pocket. If all you need is a bell, a free round-timer app does the job.
